âTo love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, the face of Jesus.” – Pope Francis
At St. Mary’s Basilica Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conference, we feel that the risk of quick fixes, however well-intentioned, does not outweigh the benefit of quality interaction and intervention. That’s why we need volunteers willing to live in solidarity with the poor. Every Saturday, we do home visits, where trained volunteers bring a box of food to a home in need. This can be a powerful tool to help our families. Rather than drop a food box on their doorstep and move on to the next need, we visit, with intensity, depth, encouragement, a prayer, and when needed critical resources.
We need all sorts of helping hands, in addition to home visits, from patient mentors who can BE with our guest, to strong backs who donât mind putting in a few hours of helpful work. If youâre inspired, seize the moment and volunteer with us and live in solidarity with the poor.
